Slide Show of October Visit
"My trip to Maine in October of 2001 began with air passage from Indainapolis to Manchester New Hampshire. It was a month to the day after the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and flying was an uncretain affair to say the least. From Manchester I rented a car and drove to the seaside town of Kennebunkport. Kennebunkport Maine in October comes close to being the most charming place I have ever been to."

Driving Downeast:
a Week in Coastal Maine
"Hoping to time my trip with the peak of fall
color, I set out on the morning of Saturday, October the seventh from our apartment in White Plains,
about thirty miles north of New York City. In times past, I'd be starting on Friday evening to make
the most of the week's vacation, staying the night somewhere along the way, maybe in a Motel 6 on
the outskirts of Boston, getting up before the first rays of sun to catch the golden light skimming
across the facades of colonial buildings, but this kind of a program tends to leave you a little
drowsy most of Saturday — getting old, after all — and I decided to be easier on myself."

Maine Atlantic Puffin and Whirlpool Photos
"
Lisa & Bob, Traveling Adventurers, decided to see the puffins at Machias Seal Island, off Jonesport,
Maine. After a deal of research, I found that the perfect time to see the puffins was late
July - early August, after the chicks had hatched but before they'd all left for sea.
While looking at a map to figure out how to get up there, I discovered that a spot nearby was marked
"Biggest Whirlpool in the Western Hemisphere". And so the adventure was planned. Gotta love the
Internet, which revealed countless other wonders of the area!

DOWNEAST AUTUMN
"The next morning we left in a cold rain but
within an hour or so passed out of it, and several uneventful hours later we arrived in the little
town of Millinocket where we had lunch and visited the Baxter State Park headquarters. We then drove
on to the park itself, and after checking in at the gatehouse, we found our first campsite. The
campgrounds in the park are some of the finest anywhere since there is a
strict carry in, carry out policy in place (they will even make you drive back and clean your site
when leaving if you trash your campsite)."
